About Governing Idea

Governing Idea is a structured‑thinking coach for business writing. It teaches you to organize your reasoning using the Pyramid Principle and other executive‑communication frameworks — and then gives you an AI agent designed to reinforce that method, not replace it.

It’s built for professionals who want to sharpen their thinking, clarify their message, and write with authority. Especially useful in the quiet space between engagements, when you finally have time to strengthen your craft.

Created by a former CIO with a master’s from Middlebury’s Bread Loaf School of English — and experience teaching the Pyramid Principle to new hires at McKinsey.

Currently in private beta.

Why a custom coach instead of a general‑purpose AI?

General‑purpose AI tools will happily smooth your prose, suggest alternatives, and quietly do the thinking for you. That’s a problem if your goal is to become a stronger writer, not just produce a polished draft today.

Governing Idea is different in two specific ways:

The pedagogy is the product. Most AI writing tools optimize for output. We optimize for skill transfer. The three‑module curriculum teaches the Pyramid Principle through concept, application, and practice — in that order — so you internalize the structure rather than relying on the tool to impose it.

The AI is constrained, not open‑ended. When you write your own document in Module 3, the AI agent reviews your structure against specific Pyramid Principle criteria: governing idea, SCQA, MECE, vertical and horizontal logic, and conclusion. It doesn’t rewrite your draft. It tells you where your structure is weak and why. That constraint is the point.

The Problem

Professionals spend much of their day writing: emails, proposals, updates, briefs, analyses, recommendations. Yet most writing tools treat the symptoms, not the cause. They rewrite sentences, but they don’t help you organize your ideas, sharpen your reasoning, or build a coherent argument.

The result is polished writing that still lacks clarity, structure, and impact.

Our Philosophy

Writing is not typing — writing is thinking. And thinking improves when it’s structured. The most valuable writing tools don’t replace your judgment or your voice. They help you clarify your governing idea, make your reasoning explicit, and communicate in a way leaders can understand and act on quickly.

Good writing is the byproduct of good thinking. Our job is to strengthen both.

Our Mission

Our mission is to make structured thinking accessible to every professional — not just those with specialized communication training. We help you write with clarity, confidence, and purpose, so your ideas land the way you intend.

How It Works

Governing Idea is grounded in the Pyramid Principle. The platform includes a structured three-module curriculum:

  • Module 1: The Pyramid Principle. Twenty-five mini lessons covering the core concepts — governing idea, SCQA, MECE, horizontal and vertical logic, and the three-pass editorial framework. Read short passages, then answer diagnostic questions before moving on.
  • Module 2: From Draft to Argument. Apply what you've learned to a real business document using the Socratic method. Diagnose each structural problem yourself, then see the expert analysis revealed.
  • Module 3: Write Your Document. Write a Pyramid Principle document from scratch with AI checks at each milestone — introduction, body sections, and conclusion. The AI tells you where your structure breaks down. It does not write for you.

You can retake any module as many times as you want. Your most recent attempt is what's saved. There's no penalty for trying — only practice.

Our Approach to AI

AI should enhance human judgment, not replace it. Your content is not used to train external models. We do not sell personal data. The platform follows WCAG 2.0 AA accessibility principles and aligns with NIST AI risk‑management practices. Our focus is clarity, safety, and user control.

The AI agent that powers Module 3’s feedback is configured to operate as a coach, not a co‑writer. It teaches — never drafts, never rewrites, never does the thinking for you.

Our Commitment

We’re committed to thoughtful design, responsible AI, accessibility, and transparency. Above all, we’re committed to helping you communicate with clarity and confidence — and to teaching the craft, not just delivering the artifact.
